(4) Summary |
|
Vermilion lacquered sacred bridge; the beautiful Shinkyo is worth enough to decorate the entrance of sanctuary Nikko. The Shinkyo used to be called Yamasugeno-jabashi, which means snake bridge with sedge, or Mihashi, which just means respectable bridge. This bridge belongs to Futarasan Shrine and is designated as an important cultural property. In addition, Shinkyo was inscribed as the World Heritage in December 1999.
This reforming started in 1997 and lasted for 8years. It cost 800,000,000yen, and will be completed in March 2005.
Shinkyo is the oldest bridge in Japan in terms of drawbridge style built over the gorge. Also, Shinkyo is known as one of the finest three bridges (Kintaikyo Bridge in Yamaguchi prefecture, Saruhashi Bridge in Yamanashi pref.) in Japan. You will see a unique infrastructure that point of large wooden material is embedded into the earth or stone base on the shore. That material is used as bridge girder. You will understand cultural value and recognize importance of Shinkyo. Also, we hope that spirit of preservation for cultural asset will be spread out. It will be the first opening after Shinkyo was inscribed as the World Heritage. You will be able to walk down to the under the bridge and inspect its infrastructure.
